How to spot Augs and use electronic modules in Probably Stolen

In Probably Stolen, a sentient AI chip went rogue and hijacked its human hosts. Known as Augs, these compromised customers look like ordinary station residents until subtle behavioral signs give them away—and every faction on the station expects you to keep a gun behind the counter to enforce the anti-Aug policy.

How the rogue AI Aug threat works

As described on the official Questing Goose Studio and Steam pages, Augs are station residents whose cybernetic implants have been taken over by a rogue sentient AI chip. Unlike normal faction disputes where Security and the Black Market clash, every faction agrees on eliminating Augs, and you are given a firearm behind the counter to enforce that policy.

However, misreading the signs and shooting an innocent customer—or failing to spot real Augs on high difficulty—carries steep consequences. Certain essential recurring story characters are also marked as non-shootable so you cannot accidentally break your campaign.

When you can lose to the Augmented ending (Normal vs Hard Mode)

Missing too many Augs fills the Aug threat meter, which can trigger the 'Augmented' game-over ending. However, Patch 48.3.10 made a crucial difficulty distinction: players can no longer lose the game to the Augmented ending for missing too many Augs unless they are playing on Hard Mode.

Patch 48.3.12 also fixed a bug where shooting an Aug on Hard Mode could still erroneously advance the Aug game-over meter. Once Security officially declares the station's Aug threat over later in the campaign, Dr. Jackson will stop offering the Aug Scanner in his shop inventory.

Quirks when trading with Augs and using electronic modules

While the Aug crisis is active, you can purchase the Aug Scanner from Dr. Jackson to help confirm suspicious hosts, and all open item windows automatically hide during customer examine and shooting modes so they do not block your line of sight.

Interestingly, Update 049 notes that Aug customers no longer cause a reputation loss if you offer them mislabeled items. Separately, when managing shop electronics and cybernetic hardware, you can slot functional modules like the Learning Algo module into the Mirage Projector, or swap Desequencer crypto modules by dragging one directly onto another owned module.

Common questions

FAQ

Can missing Augs cause a Game Over on Normal difficulty?

No. Since Patch 48.3.10, players can only trigger the 'Augmented' game-over ending from missing too many Augs when playing on Hard Mode.

Where do I get the Aug Scanner in Probably Stolen?

Dr. Jackson sells the Aug Scanner while the rogue AI crisis is active, and stops stocking it once Security declares the Aug threat over.
